FTP TUTORIAL

Learning to use FTP is vital to keeping your website updated.

To transfer files from your computer to our servers, you will first need to download a program WS FTP. You can click here to download it now.

Once you've downloaded and installed WS FTP, you will have an icon placed on your desktop. You will need to first connect to the internet before we begin using the program.

Double Click on the WS FTP icon on your desktop to get the screen below. On the right hand side of this screen you will need to fill out the Host Name, User Name, and password.

Follow along with the tutorial by filling out the highlighted sections.

If you are using your web space provided by WCOIL that comes with your WCOIL account, the host name will be www2.wcoil.com. Your user name will be the user name you connect to the internet with. It will also be the first part of your email address, like yourname@wcoil.com. The password is the some one you use to connect to the internet with.

If you have your own domain name, such as www.yourname.com, the host name will be www.yourname.com. The user name and password in this case should have been given to you.

Once those fields are filled out, click on connect.

The program will automatically bring you to a WWW directory, as highlighted on the right. You will need to double click on the WWW folder and upload your files to this directory.

On the left hand side, the program will have you in a WS FTP folder. Double click on the arrow above to get out of this folder and use the scroll bars and the arrow to locate where your webpage folder on the computer is stored. It is easiest if you stored your files in a webpage folder on the C: drive.

Once you find your folder where you have your files stored, highlight the folder by clicking it once with your mouse. You can transfer all the contents of the folder by clicking the arrow in the middle of the screen pointing to the right.

If you do not want to upload all the contents of that folder, double click on the folder and then select with your mouse the files you want to upload.

With those files selected, click on the arrow in the middle of the screen pointing towards the right.

It will take a few minutes for the program to upload your files. Once it has finished, you will know they have been uploaded if they are listed in the WWW directory screen on the right hand side.

Your files are now on the world wide web.

If you were using the space provided by WCOIL with your WCOIL dial up account, the files will be at www2.wcoil.com/~yourname/filename.ext. Yourname will be replaced by your user name. The filename is the name of the file uloaded, and the extension is the type of file it is. If it is a picture it will be a .gif or .jpg file. If it was an HTML document or webpage it will be .htm or .html.

If you were uploading your files to your own domain, the files are now located at www.yourname.com/filename.ext. Yourname will be replaced with your domain name. The filename is the name of the file uploaded with the appropriate extension following.
